Happy and Sad

My friend Gabe from Kaleidoughscope of Writing wrote about some things that make him happy and sad. Its a great list that has inspired me to make one of my own. I can't classify any of these as the things that make me MOST happy, or MOST sad but they are the first things that came to my head at this moment.

Things that make me Sad:

  • When people come to costume parties without a costume. Its as if they don't respect the hosts and their friends enough to make even an iota of effort, even whilst knowing that the party probably took a lot of time to put together. UGH.

Emily and I getting ready for Value Village Prom, we know how to attend a themed party!

  • Reading fashion magazines: they have so much nice stuff I will never have :P
  • My spelling, it still surprises me how I can read so much but still rely so heavily on spell check.
  • Living without pets. I grew up with cats and dogs and fish and even a bird. Now I am at school renting with a classmate and I have no pets.
  • Knowing that the marks I get in school do not reflect my intelligence. It boils down to procrastination: my biggest crutch and shortcoming.
  • Losing close friends because either one or both of us are bad at keeping in touch over long distances.
  • Movie scenes or TV shows where parents die. For some reason, above all the sappy love stuff that gets most people choked up, I will always tear up when a kid loses a parent. Moms and Dads: Love you guys!
  • Feeling like I have so much when most of the world has so little, but knowing that if given the choice I wouldn't give it all up.

Things that make me Happy:

  • Finding money in an old jacket or pair of jeans.
  • Winning something in Roll up the Rim to Win
  • Cuddling with my boyfriend while watching a good TV show or movie. He is my replacement pet, mentioned above.

  • Reading the Pioneer Woman Confessions, her stories about ranching and pets make me yearn for the great wide open a little less. Karen at The Art of Doing Stuff is pretty hilarious and genius as well.
  • Getting to the cash register and discovering something you were already buying is on sale! Also buying something that is super on sale but really cute. I got a pair of shoes that fit this description the other day :D
  • Seeing something I like and knowing I can make it myself.
  • The look on people's faces when they find out I made something with my own two hands.
  • Running into someone you haven't seen in a long time and there being no weirdness or hesitation, you just fall right back into old patterns and hangout like no time has past. Its hard to find friends like that, I hope we can keep falling into our easy rhythms :)

Thats all for today, thanks Gabe for the great idea! My step-mom used to get us all to say our favourite part of the week at weekend dinners and I think I might start something similar here. On Fridays I will try and list a couple good things and bad things that happened in the preceding week, thinking of them together usually helps me feel better, giving the crappy stuff some perspective.

Have a great week!

BHLDN

How could I forget so easily?! I was all excited for the launch of Urban Outfitter's bridal line, I posted about it  here, and when I went to look on the 14th it still wasn't open so I forgot all about it till now!

http://www.bhldn.com/index.cfm

As anticipated it is fabulous, one surprise for me was that the collection is affiliated with Athropologie not UB. Oops, my sources must have been confused. Regardless lets take a look, shall we?

Gowns:
These three caught my eye as the more traditional of the bunch, I love the vintage looking ivory colour and the drapery.

I can imagine the desire to be a more modern fashion-forward bride poses many challenges when looking for the perfect dress. Well look no further I would wear the one on the left in a heart beat!

BHLDN website
Bridesmaids in every colour!
This isn't the only totally cute dress that comes in multiple hues. Also some stunning options for wedding guests.

Shoes and Accessories to die for
A small sample will be shown bellow, there are literally too many for me to bare, I want them all!

Simply stunning ;)

~~~
I went boarding at Mount Tremblant today, it was glorious! The sun was shinning, the snow was pretty good and the temperature stayed up! This will probably be my last trip out this season and I couldnt have spent it with a better crowd :)
Hope everyone who had reading week this past week enjoyed themselves and got some moments of rest squeezed in. For those who didn't get the pleasure, enjoy the Oscars tonight at least! I will be recording it, but as I have a midterm tomorrow morning, it would be irresponsible to sit for that length of time doing anything other than study.
Thanks for stopping by!
Quick Post!!!
I am sick today with a nasty chest cough and I cant find my cough syrup.
I hate when I get sick over reading week, it feels like such a waste.
I also tend to whine a lot when I am feeling crappy... In case you hadn't noticed.
What evs, brush it off
I am at my parent's house and there are a bunch of funny pictures on the computer. I love how my shirt looks with the "HDR-ish" effect from Picnik.
I was told by a friend I should explain some of the features on this here blog.
  • First the "Love it, Want it, Need it" options at the end of each post: these are a simple way of leaving your comments without having to go through the whole captcha song and dance. If the post is about a fashion trend, an outfit or even something I made let me know what you think right off the bat!
  • Second: I changed the font for my tag on the bottom of my pictures. I was told the old one was tacky or something. I think his exact words were "its worse than Comic Sans".... which I'm told is pretty bad.
Thats about it for today... but seriously peeps, if you are out there please let me know what you think! I write this blog a little bit just to get some of the endless ideas out of my head but mostly I do it for the chance to connect with someone out there. So let me hear it :D
The Infinity Dress
For as long as there has been American Apparel I have wanted an Infinity dress. I have something similar called "le sac" (Le Sac Dress) but it doesnt hold the promise that a true infinity dress does.
The Donna Karan version is a cool $995. - Donna Karan
It's also a popular choice for bridesmaid dresses - Twist wrap
The original Inspiration: American Apparel
So I have decided to make my own!! There are plenty of tutorials out there, here are two:
It looks pretty easy, now all I have to do is find the right fabric.
I'll keep you posted.
And just for fun, an old photos of me in my Le Sac.
Mirror Renew
I had this gold mirror that my dad gave me when I moved out of residence two years ago to brighten up the place. I was bored one day last year and thought I would try my hand at glittering... not a good idea, I ran out of green glitter so the cover wasn't consistent and my room was a mess
Unfortunately it turned out a little garish really and I grew to hate a mirror that I once didn't really think twice about.
I thought about taking a "before" picture after I had already begun taping it up. As you can see I left the gold around the edge when I glittered and will do the same with my next do over
You can see here a little better how uneven the glitter was...
So next plan!
drumrolllll
SPRAYPAINT!
I love spray paint, the whole idea of it - so fast to coat, quick drying, total symbol of being a rebel.
The only problem is I am a little trigger happy. I have yet to master the art of many thin coats.
There is the paint I used, got it at Walmart for pretty cheap. As you can see I got it on there pretty thick so it took a rather long time to dry.
If you didn't notice in the previous shot a bit of the paint got bellow the tape on the outside edge. This gave me the idea to do a little "distressing" on the gold part. I used my fingers to rub some of the black paint over the engraved outside and it turned out pretty cool! :)
So for some reason  I didn't take any pictures of it on the wall... But its next to some charcoal drawings of mine and looks pretty darn good!
Thats all for now, Happy Weekend!
The Grammy Favourites
Music's Biggest Night!
So I didn't watch the whole thing live, but I caught bits and pieces and definitely had a chance to check out the outfits.
Here are my favourites:
Kelly Osbourne - loving the ragged ruffles
Jennifer Hudson - loving the asymmetrical hem
I have to say it, those two look so fabulous these days!!! Both have put s much work into their health and it shows, the beautiful dresses don't hurt either :P
Margret Cho - Funny and sexy, love how this dress complements her tattoos
Julianne Hough - I could actually see myself in this one
Eva La Rue - what a figure
Sarah Bareilles - so cute :D
Selma Blair - adorable baby bump
Katy Perry - something a little more flashy, so no one thinks I am a stick in the mud
So even though I didnt really watch the Grammys I was able to enjoy my favourite part (the red carpet) via the lovely internet.
Finding Inpiration at PotteryBarn.com
I know I don't own a house, but I love interior decor. A girl can dream about having a Pottery Barn home someday can't she? Of course.
For now I will be content making pretty wall art, pillows and lamps for my more settled friends and family. Such as my parents, who can't say no to a pretty pillow made by yours truly :D
Here are a few things I think I could totally pull off:
Botanical Wall Art
Oversized Table Pedestal Floor Lamp
Pretty Butterfly Pillows
Wooden Shoe Ladder (I would probably make mine a little less "distressed")
On a side note: Did you know you can buy a set of vintage keys for $20
Carven Spring 2011 Ready to Wear
I am totally loving this collection. It is giving my so many ideas about how to mix up the shapes in my wardrobe!
all pictures via style.com
I think I might even try and DIY some of the drapey wrapped numbers.
And I Love those bow shoes :D
Check out the rest of the collection at the link posted above. I'm just going to say it, I had never heard of Carven before and I really like them now! Please dont think I live under a rock, I do know some stuff! Also why is it that there are already "fall 2011" collections out there. It isn't even spring yet!
